How We Tell Each Story

A closer look at how I edit for adoptable pups vs. you and your pup, so each story is shared in a way that celebrates the pups and brings out the heart behind the pictures.

How We Edit Adoptable Pup Photos vs. Sessions with You and Your Pup

Every pup deserves to be seen in a way that celebrates them and shares the heart behind the pictures, their story. When I photograph adoptable pups that are at a shelter or rescue, that means pictures that make people stop scrolling and feel something, that share a glimpse of what life could be like with them, and give them a greater chance of getting adopted. For pictures with you and your pup, like lifestyle portraits, it’s about your relationship, the small moments that share a story of the life that you have together, and all of the love between you.

Both kinds of sessions share a story and are meaningful, but they need different editing styles. Here’s how I approach each, and why.

Adoptable Pup Photography

When a pup is waiting for a home, the photo has one purpose: to make a future family pause long enough to imagine life with them.

Because of that, my editing for adoptable pups highlights:

  • The pup’s personality, the softness in their eyes, the spark, the magic, the quiet hope, whatever feels most “them.”
  • Their features, especially eyes, expression, and stance, since these are the things that connect people emotionally at first glance.
  • Their presence, which means the human advocate fades back. They still exist in the frame, but gently. The focus is on the pup because that’s who needs to be seen.

I also keep the color and light natural, but more lively, a touch lifted, so the pup feels warm and full of life. People make adoption decisions quickly, sometimes in seconds. Thoughtful editing for adoptable rescue pups supports that moment, encouraging the viewer to feel drawn to the pup instead of feeling distracted.

The goal isn’t to make the photo “perfect,” but to make the pup feel lovable and like they belong in their future family’s life.

Photography for You and Your Pup

Photographing you and your pup, and editing your pictures, is a different kind of storytelling. These pictures aren’t about a pup who needs a home; they’re about celebrating the love and life of you and your pup share, and capturing it in a way that feels true to you.

So the editing shifts to highlight:

  • Connection, the tiny gestures that tell the story of your relationship. A hand on their cheek, the look you give each other, the way your pup leans into you.
  • People and pups equally, because your story is shared. I balance the light, color, and focus so both of you feel intentional and present.
  • Lifestyle and environment, since where you spend time together says just as much as the moment itself. The trail you love, the park you adventure at, their favorite pup cup coffee shop, all of this shapes how I edit.

When editing pictures of you and your pup, you’re both highlighted, colors are true and lively, and the overall feeling is full of loving moments. These are heirloom images, the kind that hold a special place in your heart.

Why the Difference Matters

Adoptable pups need visibility. They need clarity, attention on their face, and images that tell their story without overwhelming the viewer, all while celebrating them and their future life.

Pictures of you and your pup share the story of your love and celebrate them and your life together. This editing emphasizes your connection and relationship, not just your pup.

The editing styles are for different purposes, and both are important.

Adoptable pup photography helps more pups get noticed, shared, and hopefully to their home sooner.

Portraits of you and your pup celebrate the special bond you share, your life together, and their personality and magic.

Both kinds of storytelling are at the heart of For The Pups, and each has a meaningful purpose.
